I received a notification that I was the Grand Prize winner in this contest which includes a Large Big Green Egg Grill and accessories, a trip to Allentown, PA for a minor league game and a $400 debit card.  Being that my husband and I are not able to travel, I asked if I could take everything but the trip and they agreed.  That will bring down the AVR and taxes I owe since we wouldn't take the trip and I can still keep the $400 debit card that was included in the travel package and the grill!

Thanks Craig for all that you do to bring us these sweeps and opportunities!

This is a great post!  Not only to hear about the great win, but to hear about the sponsor being flexible.  So I would call that a double win!

And yes, those taxes can bite.  Evidently I didn't calculate my state tax correctly on a 2011 win and now I owe $400.  Although part of me wants to protest, the other doesn't have the time or energy, and at least it's $400 and not $4000.  So yes, you must consider the taxes and it's nice to see that the sponsor is too.

In fact, sponsors who contribute to your assumed tax burden are the best of all.  In one case, one of my large wins was undervalued by the sponsor to about half of it's worth...which means my liability won't be much if anything...and I won't make the same mistake I made in 2011~!  My state has so overcollected this last year against my income...even with my win I should be seeing a refund!!

Anyway, congrats on the win, and enjoy all the great prizes you do get to use!

Well walton39, unless you are a weight lifter, you probably didn't want it. They had them in our local Lowes earlier this year and I was really interested...until I tried to lift the lid. Wow, is that ceramic heavy! It took both arms to lift the lid, just too heavy for me! My son has been wanting a nice grill for so long and his apartment complex only allows charcoal grills so he and his family are going to be gifted the grill and he promises to make a contribution to my taxes in April...hopefully.
